One of the probably most rewarding climbing disciplines for me is "Alpine Climbing".
ALPINE CLIMBING
The combination of mountaineering with the main purpose to reach the summit and the idea of the genuine rock climbing in which the selection of the route plays a crucial role. In alpine climbing, the way, as well as the goal is central. Knowledge of the mountain steps to the foreground. Rope handling, recognizing the risks, self-discipline and a lot more comes in to yield and makes alpine climbing so interesting and complex.
SPORT CLIMBING
The free time discipline number one is Sport Climbing. Often combined with travelling in a warm country. If with family or friends, that approach means rather enjoying and socializing than adventure or pioneer spirit. On the mostly well-secured routes of one- or two-rope length, the climber can primarily concentrate on the difficulty. Tumbles occur frequently, however, in general without any consequences. Therefore, sport climbing in the lower ranges of difficulty grades is ideal for beginners in mountaineering. Many climbers utilize sport climbing to improve their strength, endurance, technique or tactic.
ICE CLIMBING
Many can't understand it, can't stand the repulsive unapproachable attitude of ice-climb-routes. Uncountable ice pillars frozen together, resembling giant flute configurations in cathedrals. Ice curtains, seemingly moving with the wind, glittering, running water behind it, accompanied by gurgle-sounds and gush-sculptures of incredible beauty and bizarre architecture - waterfalls, frozen to 100m freestanding icicles - smallest gullies growing to valley dominating formations. All that beauty and uniqueness is captivating me. Many can't understand it, can't stand the repulsive unapproachable attitude of ice climb-tours and hate the swollen finger joints and the cold. The ever-changing element needs steady new assessment of the situation, technical skills and lots of specific know-how and experience. If on north faces, short ice-columns or multiple rope ice climbs, the demand to the climber is huge, creating one of the few opportunities in modern alpinism where each of the ascents let us sense some pioneering spirit.
TECHNO
Ascending big mountain faces with technical aids like ladders and hooks (born in the sixties) has here as well established itself to a discipline on its own. Techno Climbing, Big-wall or as well "A-Climbing" is it called, recently gaining back attention through the ascents on the most difficult lines of granite giants in the Yosemite National Park, in Patagonia, in the Karakorum or on Baffin Island. There, the rating scale for the artificial climbing ranges from A1 to A5. Camps are getting built on "Big walls" and the faces are mastered in several phases, sleeping on ledges or in hanging tents. Having to carry all the gear, that kind of climbing seems to be rather work than recreation.
