Excellent start of this year’s sled dog racing season for metal working company GLA-WEL. Their partner Emil Inauen wins long-distance stage race La Grande Odyssée.
Employees and management board of the metal working company GLA-WEL in Melle are more than happy about Emil Inauen’s success. By winning in La Grande Odyssée (10 to 20 January 2010), Emil Inauen successfully kicked off the first conjoint racing season for both partners. The extreme athlete from Switzerland from the start controlled the race and finished first confidently. His wife and team partner Barbara Inauen came in on t0th position, beating the rest of her fellow female competitors. And that’s not even it – the mushers were awarded with the Best Dog Care Award for treating their dogs especially fair and for keeping them outstandingly fit. Only at the end of last year both, GLA-WEL and Emil Inauen, had agreed on working closely together. For this reason, Inauen’s dogs had been transported from their home in Norway to the race in France in a specialized GLA-WEL-trailer for sled dogs. |

Start in der Dunkelheit mit leichten Schritten, da diese in den ersten und geschenkten Stunden auf der gefrorenen Unterlage stattfinden, währenddem das Chüealptal langsam aus dem Schlaf erwacht... eine Bergspitze nach der anderen wird vor dem hellblauen Himmel von der stärker werdenden Sonne angezündet... mit der zunehmenden Steigung wird die Kopffarbe röter und der Gesichtsaudruck verkrampfter... die Hoffnung, dass auf der kommenden Anhöhe das Tagesziel erreicht ist, stirbt zuletzt... nach knapp fünf Stunden hinter uns und einem überwältigenden Panorama vor und unter uns die Freude über die eigene Leistung und die wundervolle Natur... die Dankbarkeit über Emils pädagogisches Geschick, das Endziel der Tour nicht zu früh zu verraten... aber auch das Staunen darüber, wie weit wir mit vielen langsamen und kleinen Schritten in ein paar wenigen Stunden kommen können...

The 2004 edition of the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race will start in less than one week, on 14 February.
Along with Emil Inauen, the 31 year old mountain sports professional will race their teams of dogs over the 1000 miles separating Fairbanks, in Alaska, and Whitehorse, in the Yukon (Canada), during the coldest months of the Alaskan winter at temperatures reaching -50ºC.
Emil Inauen will be the only participant to race with a European team of dogs. Emil and his family flew with Cargolux from Luxembourg to Fairbanks in October 2003 and has spent the past months training his team. He will compete with 23 male and 7 female “mushers” (or sled drivers).
The trail will take the participants over 5 mountain passes at altitudes reaching up to 1200 meters, follow the frozen Yukon river valley for over 1650 km and face numerous hazards due to the cold and the rough terrain they are crossing.
It is a physically as much as psychologically testing endurance race, where the mushers must adapt to the rhythm of their dogs, sleeping short hours during the day, sometimes without shelter, and racing mainly at night.
Very strict rules are laid out which forbid any exterior assistance to the mushers and their dogs outside the medical attention and food provided by the race organizers at the 8 check points dotted along the trail. With this true sports-minded attitude the event has gained worldwide recognition and a reputation of being “The hardest race in the world”. |

13th, Emil fly for preparations and train the dogs to go in to the Yukon Quest qualifying race, the "Quest 250", to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, Canada.
In the next five weeks he will build his team for the 250-start at February 9th at Frank Turner's place, the Muktuk Kennel near Whitehorse. |

14th Emil and Walter climb famous Piz Linard. On their way to Piz Sagliains they descend Piz Linards noth-west ridge. When they are almost at the bottom Emil get hit by rocks and unable to keep on going on their own, they have to be rescued by helicopter. More about the accident comming soon...
